Christ's "invisible presence", Jehovah's Witnesses, and the Antichrist

In each of the scriptures below notice the word translated "coming" is the same.

2064 [e]
erchomenon
ρχόμενον
coming

2 John 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.

Matthew 24:29 "But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 "And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.

Now look at the links below to see quotes from Watchtower publications that show that they meet the description of the antichrist given in 2 John 1:7. They say that Christ does not return in the flesh:

Christ's invisible return in 1914... Why is this an important teaching to Jehovah's Witnesses?

Do Jehovah's Witnesses believe Jesus was resurrected?

Cults deny the doctrine of Justification

False teachers believe that we should prepare for judgment day by being faithful to the law (if not the ten commandments, their own) that this will cause us to progress in sanctification so that we will be obedient and ready for judgment day. This contradicts, among other scriptures, Galatians 3.

They might not use the word justification, or they might talk about justification but give it a different meaning.

We believe that Jesus has done everything needed to prepare us for judgment day; that upon belief in Him, we have been given His righteousness, even as we are still sinning, still being sanctified. (Hebrews 10:14) That is the doctrine of justification.

"But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe." Romans 3:21-22

For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, “It is through obeying that a person has life.” This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, “It is through obeying the law that a person has life.” Galatians 3:11-12

"But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners." - Romans 4:4,5

God's Character and The Law; Coming to know the only True God (John 17:3)

Does the Law show God's character? Is it a good way to get to know God?

God's eternal moral law, the law that never changes and is written on everyone's hearts, that is the sum of every law that He ever gave: "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." Matthew 7:12

Many of Israel's laws were regulating things that were already established... but no, loving your neighbor, doing to others as you would have them do to you, does not permit beating your slaves, etc. So no, God did not give permission for that...

Which statement is true?

We are never permitted to sin. or We cannot avoid sinning.

They are both true. Thinking only one is true causes so many misunderstandings.

The laws given to Israel were not God's perfect plan for people. Jesus said about those laws, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning." Matthew 19:8

Jesus also said repeatedly, "you have heard that it was said" "but I say to you" in Matthew 5.

For understanding we have to turn things around. The reality isn't God demanding sacrifices, the blood demanded in the OT. The reality is Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:2) God giving us His own blood. (Acts 20:28)

The Bible tells us that there is one way to get to know God:

JESUS

Jesus washed His disciples feet. He taught that we should love our neighbor, that we should do to others as we want them to do to us.That we should love our enemies and bless those who hurt us.

For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:17

Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. John 14:9

And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 1 John 5:20

Cult characteristics:

A lot of people that argue against the JW or who leave the JW are in another cult. Here are some things to watch out for:

Cults twist the word of God to say what they want. For example, they will claim that true worship disappeared for a time and had to be restored, which contradicts Jesus' words at Matthew 16:18 and 28:20. Or they will teach that Jesus has appointed them
to teach in His place which contradicts Hebrews 1:2, 1 Timothy 2:5, and 1 John 2:27.

They focus on a message other than the gospel that Paul preached, and put heavy burdens on the people.
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace." Galatians 5:4,1

They focus on things that we should fear.
"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." 1 John 4:18 (and Romans 8:15)

They teach that salvation and survival of the end times relies on our own efforts.
"Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness." Romans 4:4-5 (and John 6:29)

"Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come." 1 Thessalonians 1:10 (and Romans 5:9)

Now that you know some ways that cults contradict the Bible, take a look at my other cult characteristics page which takes a secular approach: http://onemediator.blogspot.com/2014/05/cult-characteristics.html

Korah rebelled against Moses...

This is a quote from the writer of Seventh Day Adventist doctrine Ellen G. White, does it sound familiar to Jehovah's Witnesses?

“If you seek to turn aside the counsel of God to suit yourselves, if you lessen the confidence of God’s people in the testimonies He has sent them, you are rebelling against God as were Korah, Dathan, and Abriam.” Testimonies 5, p. 66.
E. G. White compares herself to Moses, when Korah, Dathan, Abriam and others rebelled against the leadership of Moses, God destroyed them (Numbers 16). EGW was using fear to control people, and also in effect, calling herself their Mediator from God.

Cult Characteristics:

Cult members do not realize that they are in a cult. Because all cults have different beliefs, cult experts have identified common characteristics of cults, which they use to identify new cults. University of California at Berkeley (19 Characteristics)
Recruitment
1. Deception - Group identity and/or true motives are not revealed. The group leaders tell members to withhold truth from outsiders.2. Emotional Leverage/Love Bombing - Instant friendship, extreme helpfulness, generosity and acceptance...Group recruiters "lovingly" will not take "no" for an answer-invitations impossible to refuse without feeling guilty and/or ungrateful. "Love", "generosity", "encouragement" are used to lower defenses and create an ever increasing sense of obligation, debt and guilt.
3. Exploit Personal Crisis - They use an existing crisis as a means of getting you to participate. They exploit vulnerability arising from:
  • Broken relationships
  • Death in the family
  • Loss of job
  • Move to new location
  • Loneliness/depression
  • Guilt/shame
  • Stress/fear
4. Crisis Creation - They employ tactics designed to create or deepen confusion, fear, guilt or doubt. i.e. "you aren't serving God the way He intended." Questions areas of faith never before examined or explored and attack other faiths specifically.5. All The Answers - Provide simple answers to the confusion they, themselves, create. Support these answers with material produced or "approved" by the group.
Programming
1. Intense Study - Focus is on group doctrine and writings. Bible, if used at all, is referred to one verse at time to "prove" group teachings.2. Opposer Warnings - Recruiters are told that "Satan" will cause relatives and friend to say bad things about the group to try to "steal them away from God." Recruits soon believes group members, alone, are truthful/trustworthy.
3. Guilt and Fear - Group dwells on members' "sinful nature" (many use public confession). Guilt and fear arising from "failing God" are magnified to manipulate new member.
4. Schedule Control & Fatigue - Study and service become mandatory. New member becomes too busy to question. Family, friends, jobs and hobbies are squeezed out, further isolating the new member.
5. Attack Independent Thought - Critical thinking is discouraged as prideful and sinful, blind acceptance encouraged.
6. Divine Commission - Leader(s) claim new revelation from God, within past 200 years, in which all but their group are rejected by God. They, alone, speak for God.
7. Absolutism - They insist on total, unquestioning obedience and submission to the group, both actions AND thoughts. Group "love" and acceptance becomes dependent upon obedience and submission. Unconditional love...isn't.
8. Totalism - "Us against them" thinking. Strengthens group identity. Everyone outside of group lumped under one label.
Retention
1. Motive Questioning- When sound evidence against the group is presented, members are taught to question the motivation of the presenter. The verifiable (sound documentation) is ignored because of doubts over the unverifiable (presenter's motives). See Opposer Warnings (#2 above).2. Information Control - Group controls what convert may read or hear. They discourage (forbid) contact with ex-members or anything critical of the group. May say it is the same as pornography making it not only sinful and dangerous but shameful as well. Ex-members become feared and avoidance of them becomes a "survival issue."
3. Isolation, Separation & Alienation - Group becomes substitute family. Members encouraged to drop worldly (non-members) friends. May be told to change jobs, quit school, give up sports, hobbies, etc.
4. Coercion - Disobedience, including even minor disagreement with group doctrine, may result in expulsion and shunning.
5. Phobias - The idea is planted that anyone who leaves goes into a life of depravity and sin, loses their sanity, dies, or will have children die, etc. Constant rumors of bad things happening to people who leave. No one ever leaves for "legitimate reasons."
6. Striving for the Unreachable - Group membership and service are essential for salvation..."Work your way into God's favor." NO matter what you do, it is never enough.

100 Years of Kingdom Rule - THE WATCHTOWER (STUDY EDITION) JANUARY 2014

100 Years of Kingdom Rule—How Does It Affect You?*

This article is clearly asserting that God's Kingdom was established in 1914. Then what Kingdom was Paul talking about at Colossians 1:13? "For he has... brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves."
Watchtower: "The first mission of God’s newly installed King was to wage war against his Father’s chief Adversary, Satan." "Jesus then used his kingly authority to appoint a “faithful and discreet slave.”
Jesus: “So if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out, or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe them." Matthew 24:26
Watchtower: "Jesus Christ had begun to rule in heaven as King of God's Kingdom in 1914."
Jesus: “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or ‘There He is,’ do not believe him." Matthew 24:23

I will listen to Jesus rather than the men writing this article! He said not to listen to people who say that they know what he is doing!

An example of a Mind Control technique: Information control

Destructive mind control can be understood in terms of four basic components, which form the acronym BITE:

Behavior Control
Information Control
Thought Control
Emotional Control

It is important to understand that destructive mind control can be determined when the overall effect of these four components promotes dependency and obedience to some leader or cause.

It is not necessary for every single item on the list to be present. Mind controlled cult members can live in their own apartments, have nine-to-five jobs, be married with children, and still be unable to think for themselves and act independently. - From chapter two of Freedom of Mind: Helping Loved Ones Leave Controlling People, Cults and Beliefs by Steve Hassan.

Here we see one type of Information Control, access to non-cult sources of information minimized or discouraged:

"False religious propaganda from any source should be avoided like poison! Really, since our Lord has used ‘the faithful and discreet slave’ to convey to us ‘sayings of everlasting life,’ why should we ever want to look anywhere else?—John 6:68.” – w87 11/1 p.20 par. 16

"Wise King Solomon wrote: ‘Take a warning: To the making of many books there is no end, and much devotion to them is wearisome to the flesh.’ (Ecclesiastes 12:12) One might add that the reading of many books published today is not only wearisome to the flesh but, frankly, dangerous to the mind.” – w00 10/1 p. 10 par. 9

A seed to plant with Jehovah's Witnesses

Jehovah's Witnesses are told that if they are not faithful in what is least (obeying the Governing Body about avoiding non-JWs, and going from door to door, for example) they will not be faithful in much, like doing what they need to do to make it through the tribulation. It is this fear that keeps them under the control of the cult.

but 1 Thessalonians 1:10 says "Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come." That fear was broken! It was about a year later that I was saved.

Please share this scripture with Jehovah's Witnesses. They desperately need the good news.

Disassociation Letter

Dear Jehovah’s Witnesses,

You may be wondering why you haven’t seen us recently. We have been working through some things and thought we would let you know what they are. We know how important it is to “make sure of all things” and “always make a defense for the faith that is in you”.

1. Who is my mediator?  Who is your mediator?

"Likewise, the Greater Moses, Jesus Christ, is not the Mediator between Jehovah God and all mankind. He is … to only 144,000 members" Worldwide Security under the Prince of Peace, p10 “There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, a man, Christ Jesus.” 1 Timothy 2:5 “Christ is a mediator of a new covenant.”Hebrews 9:15

Moses was the mediator of the Law covenant between Jehovah God and the nation of Israel. –Insight on the Scriptures under Mediator  God’s prophet and channel of communication to the nation of Israel was Moses…  Later, the anointed faithful followers of Jesus Christ were to serve as a “faithful and discreet slave” in communicating to Jehovah’s people how to apply Bible principles in their lives. Watchtower 1993 2/1 p. 15

Moses helped the nation of Israel to keep the covenant and to receive its benefits…–Insight on the Scriptures under Mediator The “great crowd” of “other sheep” that is forming today come under benefits that flow from that new covenant … by associating with the “little flock” of those yet in that covenant. Watchtower 1979 4/1 “No one comes to the Father except through me.” —John 14:6

We have decided to accept Christ as our one and only mediator, as the scriptures state. Can you reconcile this with the doctrines of Jehovah’s Witnesses?

2. Believing or Exercising?

Another discrepancy: “It is for the reward of eternal life that every last person on earth should now be working… [Jehovah’s Witnesses] are working hard now for the reward of                        eternal life… making themselves eligible to receive the reward of eternal life.”  WT, Aug. 15, 1972

When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. Romans 4:4,5

It is clear that Paul wrote to the Galatians, people who had already accepted Christ’s sacrifice, in order to correct them of their erroneous view of adding works as a requirement for righteousness. “You are parted from Christ, whoever you are that try to be declared righteous by means of law; you have fallen away from his undeserved kindness. How foolish can you be? After starting your Christian lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort? For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, “It is through obeying that a person has life.” For such freedom Christ set us free. Therefore stand fast, and do not let yourselves be confined again in a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 3:3,12; 5:4;1
Upon using the Kingdom Interlinear translation I found that at John 3:16,18,36 and similar Scriptures, the Greek word is “believing”. The word “exercising” has been added in the New World Translation.

3. The Anointed and the Other Sheep Class

Romans 8:8… “So those who are in harmony with the flesh cannot please God. However, you are in harmony, not with the flesh, but with the spirit, if God’s spirit truly dwells in you. But if anyone does not have Christ’s spirit, this one does not belong to him. You received a spirit of adoption as sons, by which spirit we cry out: “Abba, Father!” The spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are God’s children. Everyone who practices righteousness has been born from him. See what sort of love the Father has given us, so that we should be called children of God; and such we are. Everyone believing that Jesus is the Christ has been born from God, Romans 8:8,9,161 John 2:29; 3:1; 5:1 A Watchtower recently admonished us to walk in spirit as in Romans 8:1-8. Look at scriptures in context!

The Watchtower says: "Only a limited number are born again. The great crowd does not need to be born again. Their life is earthly, not heavenly." - Watchtower 4/1/1988, p. 4
But wait, the Kingdom of God is not just in heaven!!!
"Manifestly, God’s kingdom comes to earth and his will is then done on earth "-- Watchtower 1/1/1959 p.25-29

Look at the parable of the wheat and the weeds. When the wheat are left over: “At that time the righteous ones will shine as brightly as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.” Matthew 13:43 Only righteous children of God are allowed in the Kingdom, whether in heaven or on earth.  There is no other sheep class in Romans 8, Matthew 13, or 1 John 3 only two classes of people are mentioned and if they are not Children of God, being led by Holy Spirit and guaranteed a reward then they are not part of God's people at all. I think that apostate doctrines are dooming the Great Crowd of Jehovah’s Witnesses to the fate of no mediator, no Heavenly Father, and no hope. “The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it.” Psalm 37:29 “Everyone who practices righteousness has been born from him.” 1 John 2:29

I also see that if one is a Child of God, then one is part of the kingdom covenant as well. Romans 8:17; There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor freeman, there is neither male nor female; for YOU are all one [person] in union with Christ Jesus. Moreover, if YOU belong to Christ, YOU are really Abraham’s seed, heirs with reference to a promise. Galatians 3:28,29

4. Is Michael the Archangel Jesus, the only begotten Son of God?

I think that the identity of Jesus Christ is the most important doctrine one must get right. If you do not believe that I am you will die in your sins. John 8:24 Everyone that denies the Son does not have the Father either. 1 John 2:23     I  am    γώ εμι,  John 8:24  Kingdom  Interlinear.

Who is Jesus Christ? The Apostle John has this to say about Jesus Christ: he was also calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God. Look at the context with the quotes. This was John speaking, not the Pharisees, but John saying this at John 5:18. John also has this to say: He that confesses the Son has the Father also. Whoever has the Son has eternal life  Jesus Himself said: in order that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He that does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.. 1 John 2:23; 5:11,12; John 5:23

‘Michael the great prince’ is none other than Jesus Christ himself.Watchtower 12/15/84 I cannot agree, after reading Hebrews chapter 1 and 2 that Jesus is Michael the Archangel. To which one of the angels did he ever say: “You are my son; I, today, I have become your father”? But with reference to which one of the angels has he ever said: “Sit at my right hand, until I place your enemies as a stool for your feet”? Michael the Archangel? For it is not to angels that he has subjected the inhabited earth to come, about which we are speaking. But we behold Jesus, who has been made a little lower than angels, crowned with glory and honor.

Insight on the Sciptures, Under Michael: Scriptural evidence indicates that the name Michael applied to God’s Son before he left heaven to become Jesus Christ and also after his return.” To which name should every knee bow? Michael? No, it is to God’s name. Is it not I, Jehovah, besides whom there is no other God; a righteous God and a Savior, there being none excepting me? By my own self I have sworn—out of my own mouth in righteousness the word has gone forth, so that it will not return—that to me every knee will bend down, every tongue will swear. It is to Jesus. so that in the name of Jesus every knee should bend of those in heaven and those on earth and those under the ground, and every tongue should openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord Isaiah 45:21-23 Phil 2:10, 11

“I, Jehovah, am doing everything, stretching out the heavens by myself, laying out the earth. Who was with me?” Isaiah 44:24 But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, “In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.” Hebrews 1:8-10

“You are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “even my servant whom I have chosen, in order that you may know and have faith in me, and that you may understand that I am the same One. Before me there was no God formed, and after me there continued to be none. I—I am Jehovah, and besides me there is no Savior.” Isaiah 43:10,11 In [the] beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god. John 1:1 Hmmm…

This is what Jehovah has said, the King of Israel and the Repurchaser of him, Jehovah of armies, ‘I am the first and I am the last, and besides me there is no God. And who is there like me? Isaiah 44:6 “‘Look! I am coming quickly, and the reward I give is with me, to render to each one as his work is. I am the Al´pha and the O·me´ga, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. Happy are those who wash their robes, that they may gain entrance into the city by its gates. Outside are the idolaters and everyone liking and carrying on a lie. I, Jesus, sent my angel to bear witness to you” Revelation 22:12-16

5. Destroys families and deceives

In contrast to “No one should be forced to worship in a way that he finds unacceptable or be made to choose between his beliefs and his family.” of Awake! July 2009 p.29, “Does the study of the Bible lead to family breakup? No.” We have examples in the Watchtower of parents deciding to obey the organization instead of allowing their natural feelings for their children:  But they love their son so much! Strong emotions might cause them to reason: ‘How can we help our boy return to Jehovah if we severely limit our association with him? Would we not accomplish more by maintaining regular contact with him?’ But what will those dear parents do? Will they obey Jehovah’s clear direction? Or will they rationalize that they can have regular association with their disfellowshipped son? July 15 2011 However, because he did not receive even the slightest communication from any of his family, the burning desire to be with them became one motivating factor in his restoring his relationship with Jehovah. Think of that if you are ever tempted to violate God’s command not to associate with your disfellowshipped relatives. April 2012 Page 12, paragraph 17

No where in the Bible do I see these commands. Once again I remember to obey God: “For men will be having no natural affection, and from these turn away. 2 Tim 3

6. False Christs:

I have decided to listen to the Bible and to Jesus, rather than to men, to the writers of the Jehovah’s Witness literature. “But sanctify the Christ as Lord in your hearts.”--1 Peter 3:15 His name should therefore be sanctified, or set apart as holy. -- Watchtower 1991 9/15 p. 7
…the title “Christ” means “Anointed One” --Watchtower 1969 1/1 p. 29 "First, though, these anointed Christians needed cleansing. As Malachi 3:1-5 had foretold, Jehovah God and his 'messenger of the covenant,' Jesus Christ, came to inspect the spiritual temple in the spring of 1918." Watchtower 1993 5/1 p. 15

Religious history is also full of charismatic leaders who inspired people to be devoted to them but who brought disaster upon their followers. “Be careful that no one misleads you,” warned Jesus, “for many men will come in my name saying ‘I am the Christ’, and they will mislead many.” (Matthew 24:4, 5, Phillips)—Watchtower 1998 2/15 p. 23

At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you ahead of time. Matthew 24:23-25

"The book You May Survive Armageddon into God’s New World, released last June, and the article “Jehovah Is in His Holy Temple,” published in the November 15 English issue of The Watchtower, prove that Jehovah came accompanied by his Angel of the covenant, Jesus Christ, to the spiritual temple in the spring of 1918."--Watchtower 12/15/55 p. 748

How could we listen to this instead of Jesus Christ? So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Matthew 24:26,27

God, who long ago spoke on many occasions and in many ways to our forefathers by means of the prophets, has at the end of these days spoken to us by means of a Son, For if the word spoken through angels proved to be firm, and every transgression and disobedient act received a retribution in harmony with justice; how shall we escape if we have neglected a salvation of such greatness in that it began to be spoken through [our] Lord. Hebrews 2:1-3For one is your teacher. Neither be called ‘leaders,’ for your Leader is one, the Christ. Matthew 23:8-10 And as for you, the anointing that you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to be teaching you; but, as the anointing from him is teaching you about all things, and is true and is no lie, and just as it has taught you, remain in him. 1 John 2:27

If you are reading this, we want you to know that we love you. It is our sincere hope that Christ may dwell in your hearts and you will know the breadth and length and depth of His love. We will be bowing our knees before the Father asking for His intervention in your lives. Ephesians 3:14-21; Matthew 5:43-44

We will no longer associate ourselves with an apostate cult.

Jehovah's Witnesses replace Christ

"The anointed and their other sheep companions recognize that by following the lead of the modern-day Governing Body, they are in fact following their Leader, Christ." (Watchtower, Sep. 15, 2010)

The Jehovah's Witnesses-- A Cult?

Watchtower 1894 July 15 p.227 "… Our readers are writing to know if there may not be a mistake in the 1914 date. They say that they do not see how present conditions can hold out so long under the strain."

Watchtower 1941 September 15 p.288 "Receiving the gift, the marching children clasped it to them, not a toy or plaything for idle pleasure, but the Lord's provided instrument for most effective work in the remaining months before Armageddon."

Watchtower 1938 November 1 p.324 "...mark the words of Jesus, which definitely seem to discourage the bearing of children immediately before or during Armageddon"

Face the Facts (1938) pp.46-50 "Would it be Scripturally proper for them to now marry and to begin to rear children? No, is the answer, which is supported by the Scripture…. Those Jonadabs who now contemplate marriage, it would seem, would do better if they wait a few years, until the fiery storm of Armageddon is gone..."

Awake! 1969 May 22 p.15 "If you are a young person, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things."

Awake! 1974 November 8 p.11 "The evidence is that Jesus' prophecy will shortly have a major fulfillment, upon this entire system of things. This has been a major factor in influencing many couples to decide not to have children at this time."

Kingdom Ministry May 1974 p.3 How Are You Using Your Life? "Reports are heard of brothers selling their homes and property and planning to finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service. Certainly this is a fine way to spend the short time remaining before the wicked world's end."

Awake! 1989 May 8 p.13 What Career Should I Choose? "A university degree may or may not improve your employment prospects. But one fact is indisputable: "The time left is reduced"! (1 Corinthians 7:29) For all its presumed benefits, would four years or more in a university be the best use of that remaining time?-Ephesians 5:16."

"Shortly, within our twentieth century, the "battle in the day of Jehovah" will begin against the modern antitype of Jerusalem, Christendom." The Nations Shall Know That I Am Jehovah p. 216

"Some of that "generation" could survive until the end of the century. But there are many indications that "the end" is much closer than that!" Watchtower 1984 March 1 pp.18-19

Matthew 24:45 “Who really is the faithful and discreet slave ... 48 “But if ever that evil slave should say in his heart, ‘My master is delaying,’49 and should start to beat his fellow slaves ... 50 the master of that slave will come on a day that he does not expect and in an hour that he does not know, 51 and will punish him with the greatest severity and will assign him his part with the hypocrites. There is where weeping and the gnashing of teeth will be.

Taught to hate

Just a couple of quotes from the Watchtower:

Jesus encouraged his followers to love their enemies, but God’s Word also says to “hate what is bad.” When a person persists in a way of badness after knowing what is right, when the bad becomes so ingrained that it is an inseparable part of his make-up, then in order to hate what is bad a Christian must hate the person with whom the badness is inseparably linked. Indicating that Jesus did not mean for us to love the hardened enemies of Jehovah, David expressed this God-approved attitude:“Do I not hate those who are intensely hating you, O Jehovah, and do I not feel a loathing for those revolting against you? With a complete hatred I do hate them. They have become to me real enemies.”—Matt. 5:44; Amos 5:15; Ps. 139:21, 22. --Watchtower July 15, 1961 pp 420

Christian elders may have to act with courage similar to that of Jehu. (1 Cor. 5:9-13)

"Jehu announced that he intended to hold “a great sacrifice” for Baal. (2 Ki. 10:18, 19) “This is a clever play on words on the part of Jehu,” says one scholar. While the term employed here “generally means ‘sacrifice,’ it is also used of the ‘slaughter’ of apostates.”"

"It is true that Jehu spilled much blood. Yet, the Scriptures present him as a courageous man..."-- Watchtower November 15, 2011

An example of what being in a cult is like...

Trigger warning

This post is meant to show people the control exerted over every aspect of the cult member's life. This has been edited for time as the talk droned on much longer than this, but these are quoted as well as I could do as I was typing out a transcript. They are not allowed to be successful, or to feel good about success they may have...

Jehovah's Witness District Convention Talk "Avoid Testing God in Your Heart"

Higher Education:

"How do we feel when there is council or direction on how we should view higher education? Jehovah's Organization is very clear on this subject, but have we taken a stand like the world around us and reason in our minds that this is the only way we can have a secure future? Even if I have to sacrifice my spirituality, higher education is the way to go? Could we be testing God in our heart by doubting his organizational view in this matter?"

Disfellowshipping (Shunning):

"Have we taken the view that Jehovah's Organization does not have the right or scriptural authority to take such action? Could we be testing God in our hearts by secretly doubting the organization's view on disfellowshipping? We must guard our hearts against murmuring about any organizational procedures or adjustments in our understanding."

Information Control:

"Some feel that the spiritual food received from Jehovah's Organization is not enough. They need more. So some have taken it upon themselves to provide more. A few have pursued independent group studies of Biblical Hebrew and Greekin order to analyze the accuracy of the New World Translation. Others have produced websites and chat rooms for the purpose of exchanging and debating scriptural views. Still others feel the need to produce publications to supplement what is already provided by Jehovah's Organization."

Thought Control:

"As a reminder: Jesus said at Matthew 24:45 that he would appoint a faithful and discreet slave to provide food at the proper time. Jesus would appoint them over all of his belongings. Imagine thinking that we would know better or that we could somehow supplement the rich spiritual food coming from Jesus' faithful and discreet slave, those whom he has appointed. With that in mind the slave class does not endorse any literature, meetings or websites that are not produced or organized under its oversight. There is only one official internet website where one can find all the information one needs on Jehovah's Witnesses... and that is JW.org. Now I exhort you brothers, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that you should all speak in agreement and that there should not be divisions among you but that you may be fitly united in the same mind and the same line of thought. Doubting theocratic appointments even in our hearts could weaken our confidence in decisions being made."

"Watchtower November 1, 2006 "Submission to Christ also involves our showing proper respect for the men used by him to take the lead in the work he is now doing. We do well to examine our hearts in this regard. This will help us to guard against any critical thinking which could easily evolve into an apostasy."

"You see apostates like Kora complain and rebel against the truth and they reject what Jehovah provides. Our paying attention to such apostate propaganda or negative comments can cause us to doubt those taking the lead and the value of the spiritual food coming from Jehovah. That doubt could lead to disaster."

Thoughts from a former JW:

"I grew up in the 1980's but I didn't understand that the great purge was a result of them taking Jesus away from us like I do now." "What's the best way to control information? Anyone finds out the truth about the truth, disfellowship them and keep the rank and file isolated." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuDwTMXzE_A

“So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs." --Matt 10:26-27

My Life in a Religious Cult

I have studied the Bible my whole life. I believed that Jesus died for my sins and that without his sacrifice I had no hope. I was baptized in 1990, symbolizing this belief and dedicating myself to doing the will of His Father. I acknowledged that baptism identified me with “God’s spirit-directed organization”. I was told that my religious organization was the only group of True Christians who worshipped correctly. I really thought that everything they teach is based on the Bible. I worked hard trying to prove my worthiness to God so that I would survive judgment day, spending much of my time on Bible study and preaching. In fact, since I was taught to put God’s Kingdom first, I felt guilty when doing anything else.

While in the organization I felt so low and full of inadequacies... My mom would send me emails twice a week telling me she feared for my life because my meeting attendance wasn’t good enough. At meetings we were admonishment to do more, more, more and to make kingdom preaching a priority no matter what your circumstances. We were told that we might not make it through the  the Great TribulationF if we miss one meeting, or if we weren’t regular in kingdom preaching, which is considered “faithful in least”. One little girl said she wouldn’t play with my daughter because she didn’t see her attend meetings often enough. I suffered from health problems and depression, and had babies with special needs. I just couldn’t perform for them. We had no friends.

Eventually we were tired of being alone and have decided to make friends elsewhere. My mom was very upset with me for having friends who are not part of the organization and allowing my daughter to have them. She says I will fall away to Satan and God will destroy me in Armageddon.6 I tell her that I don’t see any bad influence from our new friends, (which means they are not bad association) and I don’t listen to her.
I noticed that some Christian friends of mine were praising God for answered prayers. I thought that they must be deluded. Surely God wouldn’t answer their prayers, I was taught that they don’t pray to the true God, and besides, He didn’t even answer mine. I was taught that we should “work in harmony”2 with our prayers, and of course, I was always failing, so I stopped praying altogether, knowing that I didn’t deserve God’s help. So you see I was both humble and proud, that is how cults work. Proud that I was in an elite group, the only ones with the truth, but humbled because I was never good enough for God’s approval. Fear and shame keep people in the cult. But you would never know that when I would argue my faith, with a scripture for every question, sure that I was right and everyone else was wrong, so sure that they needed the "truth".
I found that many within the congregation influenced us to be judgmental, causing unloving actions towards others, calling those outside of the organization “worldy”, “dead”, or “goats” and those within the organization “weak”, all of which are “bad association”.3 I was thinking that maybe the problems I have seen are just in the congregations that I have attended. I thought that perhaps this was a test of faith. If God has a people then surely he wants me to support them, and the new literature printed by the organization was impressive. I decided to strengthen myself and my family to withstand the destructive influence of the congregation. So I started doing more Bible study and concentrating on that first. Then when we were ready I would be sure to comment, always pointing to God’s personality; I thought maybe I could be a good influence, help to readjust the congregation’s thinking.

Gradually I started to see holes in the cult’s theology. One of the first things I noticed was the emphasis on fear of the great tribulation and armageddon, and gradually I saw that this did not just come from the congregation, but from the printed literature, especially the picturesF. I kept thinking that surely God is in control of the end times and doesn’t hate me enough to destroy me. I would read over the accounts of God's judgment and see that He stays in control and saves His people. The Jews that obeyed and fled Jerusalem were not involved in the suffering of the great tribulation.

Later a Christian showed me 1 Thessalonians 1:10. This scripture planted a seed. “To wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come.” I realized that the Bible says that there is no reason to fear the great tribulation. Later I found 1 John 4:17-18 and sent it to my mom when she told me that she was afraid that my family would be destroyed.By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.” She told me to be careful. Using scripture to argue is exactly what apostates do.

I was always confused about Old Earth and creation so I did some research on these topics so that I would know how to teach my kids. I was warned by friends not to read anything written by Christians. These writings are a part of Babylon the Great, so they preferred teaching their kids evolution from secular sources. They warned that the organization publishes everything I ever need to read.5 I did not let them stop me. I was impressed with what I read and began to believe that God uses these Christians too. I used to join in with the secularists who would attack and abuse Christians because Jehovah’s Witnesses strongly denounce all other religions and had taught me to hate them. But now I started defending them.

I met someone who was raised in the cult, but was never baptized, so there wasn't a rule keeping me from talking to her. She was becoming a Christian after years of angry atheism. I was trying to convince her to come back to the Jehovah’s Witnesses. We talked about the Trinity and she says that the ransom means so much more to her since accepting it, and she never felt close to God with the teaching of Jesus as a separate created being. She is now drawing close to God and no longer an atheist. Why would I weaken her faith by talking her out of a doctrine that has helped her see God's love? I start to think that the Trinity doctrine isn't as evil as I was taught. (see 1 John 2:23 and John 5:23)

I know that going to the meetings just makes my depression worse and I can't bring myself to do it. My mom and her friends wouldn't leave me alone. Here is an email that I received during this time:

“Are you guys having trouble getting to the meeting, etc.? I'll tell you, from our own experience that the longer you stay away, the easier it is to not get back, and, like I've told you.....your kids will get where they won't want to go, and, that ought to scare you, thinking about that, cause I know you do know it's the truth and you surely want life for them, if not yourself. Don't fool yourself into thinking that you 'still' are a Witness,if indeed, you don't attend our 'training sessions' at the Kingdom Hall for survival.

This is a good reminder from my notes at a meeting, read it and meditate:
"Then the brother said, "It is hard to catch a fish that is full". - Why?
Because when they are full, they are not as interested in the bait. Spiritually, if we stay well-fed, prepare, meditate, attend our meetings, and participate in the ministry whole-souled, we will be spiritually full and therefore Satan's enticements will be less alluring."
You know,by not doing anything,if that's the case, you are showing Satan and Jehovah how little your relationship with Jehovah and being 'a part' of his organization means to you, and that's a scary place to be in,anytime, but,it's suicide, now!!!! But,even scarier is the fact that it's not just you and your husband who are going to lose your lives,if it continues, but your precious children, too.....who are a part of you and him, and, who look to you for direction and to lead the way. I love you and your family, and just wanted to share a lesson that we learned the hard way..............if you don't go to the meetings and participate and be 'a part' of it, then, Satan will move in and influence you, him and the kids, too! Don't doubt it!" I don't want anyone to have to learn that lesson ,and, maybe even be too late for your kids and husband ,if you come to your senses!

Interesting. Now as I read this I also see her referring to the organization as “the truth”. Didn’t Jesus say “I am the truth”? Going to meetings is going to give me life? Didn’t Jesus say “I am the life”? I also notice that I don't see personal Bible reading and prayer in this quote from a meeting. I think of two different points about this, and write a reply to the email:

I know of people who did all of the above as evidenced by their participation at the meetings and they were enticed by Satan's bait. Let's see I can think of 5 pioneers, one of which was an elder.
I pray and read my bible a lot more when people aren't scaring me with doom and gloom predictions of the Great Tribulation that Christ died to save me from. You are going to assume that I have a bad attitude... but I have a closer relationship with my heavenly Father right now than I have had in years.

Me, follower of the faithful and true witness.

I began to question why I should listen to uninspired men on these matters.8 I have been taught that they were chosen by Jesus to be the “faithful and discreet slave”. I decided to find out about this.

2. see Watchtower 7-15/1997 Prayers Require Works
F. see one example in the Watchtower 2/15/95Saved Alive Through the Great Tribulation
The great crowd must maintain their righteous standing before the Son of man without letup, which requires staying watchful right up to the end.
To succeed in standing before the Son of man, we must have his approval, which we will not have if we allow ourselves to be influenced by the thinking of this world... or to become so weighed down with life’s problems that he no longer keeps Kingdom interests first. He could become inactive (this means missing a month out in door to door publishing) or jeopardize his place in the congregation (notice the emphasis on the congregation, not God) by committing serious sin, perhaps even displaying an unrepentant attitude.
To that end, Jehovah has provided what we need by means of his Word, his holy spirit, and his visible organization. We must take full advantage of these. Further, we must be prayerful and obedient to God if we expect to have his favor. For one thing, we must develop a strong hatred for what is bad... limit association with those not dedicated to Jehovah. Thus, we will be assured that at Armageddon, Jehovah will not sweep us away in death along with the ungodly.
It is exciting to contemplate survival of the end of this system of things and the possibilityof never having to die. By serving Jehovah faithfully now, we have the assurance of life everlasting in his new world.
Watchtower12/15/1962 p.763 The person who permits a seed of discontent against Jehovah’s organization to grow until it becomes a poisonous root puts himself in a dangerous position… The loyal “sheep” see that the way to life is with Jehovah’s faithful organization.
Watchtower9/15/51 p. 556 “So work for salvation.”
6.  "Did not Jesus speak of worldly people as being spiritually dead when he said: "Let the dead bury their dead"? (Matt. 8:22) All who have begun walking the narrow way to life are spiritually alive in God’s eyes; whereas those walking the broad way to death are spiritually dead while they live. Why, then, should the living seek close association with the dead?"
"Seek right associations by staying close to the New World society."
"It is not the person whose mind is on the things of the world that can help you to be among those who will survive the end of this old world. He will hinder, not help you walk the narrow way that leads to life in God’s new world. If you maintain close association with such persons this side of God’s war of Armageddon, you run the greater likelihood of not reaching the other side of it... Why seek as friends persons who will have no place in God’s new world? Do not endanger your future with such bad associations." -- Watchtower 7/1/1961 p. 403

5. "There are now more than 350 books in circulation setting out such "creationism" dogma. Jehovah’s Witnesses reject the unreasonable theories of "creationism" in favor of what the Bible really teaches about 'creation.'"-- Watchtower 9/1/1986 p. 30 "Would you like to grow in knowledge, obtaining an education of even much greater value than can be received "in any college? You can do so by reading regularly this magazine and its companion, Awake! "-- Watchtower 6/15/1983 p.31
"This journal and other publications of the Watch Tower Society expose the unscriptural teachings of Christendom and the rest of Babylon the Great, the world empire of false religion, while upholding the truthfulness of God’s Word, the Bible."-- Watchtower 9/15/1997
8. "Proving faithful, this "slave" class would be appointed by Jesus at his second coming over all his belongings. Yes, also by means of this "faithful and discreet slave" Jesus has been with his followers.—Matt. 24:45-47.... To stay with Jesus Christ is to stay with those whom he is pleased to use. Outside the true Christian congregation, what alternative organization is there? Only Satan’s organization consisting of his political "wild beast" and his Babylonian world empire of false religion.—Rev. 13:1, 14, 15; 17:3-6.
How can we give expression to our gratitude? In more ways than one. We can show it by cooperating with the ‘faithful slave’ in preaching and in making disciples. We can show our gratitude also by eagerly feeding on the spiritual food that this "slave" provides in the form of books and magazines, as well as by attending the congregation meetings. Nor to be overlooked is our privilege of praying that Jehovah’s spirit guide and strengthen that "slave" class for the work that He has for it to do. And according to our means it is also our privilege to contribute in a material way to help to defray the expenses incurred by that ‘slave’s’ worldwide activities. Yes, in all such ways we can show that we appreciate the way that Jehovah God is using and blessing the "faithful and discreet slave," thereby also demonstrating that we have a living, active faith that proves itself by its works.—Jas. 2:17, 26."-- Watchtower 3/1/1979 p. 23

Jehovah's Witnesses: Who is your mediator?

If you ask a Jehovah's Witness this they will say that Jesus is their mediator. They end their prayers with something like "in Jesus' name". They say this because if Jesus did not die a sacrificial death we would have no chance of praying to the Father God. But in fact, they have replaced Him as mediator. You can prove this to them using questions and quotes from their publications. Here is a section of my disassociation letter. When I realized that the Watchtower was taking the place of Mediator and Greater Moses I asked the Lord to save me. I hope this helps you in your attempt to plant seeds with JWs that you come in contact with.

"Likewise, the Greater Moses, Jesus Christ, is not the Mediator between Jehovah God and all mankind. He is … to only 144,000 members" Worldwide Security under the Prince of Peace, p10

Then who is my mediator?  Who is your mediator?

“There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, a man, Christ Jesus
.” -
1 Timothy 2:5 “Christ is a mediator of a new covenant.” - Hebrews 9:15

Moses was the mediator of the Law covenant between Jehovah God and the nation of Israel. –Insight on the Scriptures under Mediator

God’s prophet and channel of communication to the nation of Israel was Moses…  Later, the anointed faithful followers of Jesus Christ were to serve as a “faithful and discreet slave” in communicating to Jehovah’s people how to apply Bible principles in their lives.

"The anointed and their other sheep companions recognize that by following the lead of the modern-day Governing Body, they are in fact following their Leader, Christ." (Watchtower, Sep. 15, 2010)
